Powering this agile X2 is a new 847cc twin cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. This high-performance engine is powerful with more torque and more horsepower than its predecessor, but despite all of its capabilities lying in wait, it doesn’t behave like a bull ready to bust out of the chutes. Instead, the power is controlled with precision and delivered in such a way that the Wolverine X2 provides an impressively smooth ride, even when you punch the pedal. Not only does it provide a smooth and powerful ride, but a quiet one as well. When it launched last year, Yamaha’s Wolverine X4 impressed the masses with its surprisingly quiet operating noise and the new Wolverine X2 shares this awesome feature. The 847-cc DOHC, eight-valve, parallel twin-cylinder engine was designed to reduce vibration which translates to a quieter ride, regardless of the RPM range. That means you can actually talk to the people riding with you, not yell over the top of engine noise, which makes for more fun on the trail. It’s true, the Wolverine X2 is incredibly well mannered but it’s also adept and more than ready to conquer significant terrain challenges.
The Wolverine X2 also benefits from a host of Yamaha’s Real World Tech features like the Ultramatic® continuously variable transmission (CVT) which gives operators a worry free clutch, plus the driver-controlled On-Command® four-wheel drive (4WD) system which I, personally, use a lot. Living, working, playing, hunting and recreating on the backroads means I come into contact with plenty of situations where a little backup is necessary. Most recently, the On-Command four-wheel drive helped me pull out a neighbor who was high centered in a snow bank. The 4WD system gives you the ability to switch between 2WD, limited-slip 4WD and a fully locked differential 4WD – options that give the driver more control in situations where you’re looking for more traction. Other notable features are Yamaha’s Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T®), a drive-by-wire system that gives drivers precise throttle control and class leading Electronic Power Steering.
The Wolverine X2 has an impressively compact and nimble chassis. With a footprint just under 60 inches wide and 115 inches long, the X2 is well suited to take on tight trails and help you navigate tough terrain. The ample ground clearance on the X2 is thanks to its upswept underbody design and wide-arc A-arms. These design features translate to more space between the underbody and the obstacles you are traversing, giving you the ability to clear them without getting hung up or incurring any damage to your X2. Full underbody skid plates also run damage control and protect the Wolverine X2 putting a steel blocker between the internals and anything that could possibly get hung up along the way. Suspension is also top notch and varies between plush and hi-performance depending on the model you choose. In addition to great response and handling, the KYB® shocks provide a flexible and balanced ride that perform well whether you’re hauling cargo or just cruising.
I think everyone loves to cut loose, explore new trails, and use their Side-by-Side for fun. However, the reality is that Yamaha’s Side-by-Sides are versatile and are just as capable of providing some wind in the face fun as they are adept at taking on work. The addition of an all-new tilting cargo bed is something that I’m really stoked about, and I think others will really appreciate, as well. This feature makes the X2 the ultimate work partner. The bed is rated to carry 600 pounds and when you’re ready to dump all you have to do is open the tailgate and then pull the lever on either side of the box and the piston-assisted bed will spit out the contents of your cargo box with ease. Since we’re talking “work”, it would be remiss of me not to mention that the X2 has a 2,000-pound towing capacity. That’s pretty impressive considering its compact size! Use the X2 to work around your home, shop or farm. Load it up with shovels, rakes, chainsaws and other yard or habitat taming gear. Use it to haul fence posts and wire. Take the X2 on a road trip and pack it full of your camping gear. Task your X2 with packing a deer out of the field or hauling some elk quarters out from the timber. The Wolverine X2 is truly versatile and up for virtually any task at hand – work or play.
Solid doors are an awesome feature, and anyone that has plowed through the mud, snow or water understands why. Unlike doors made of mesh or webbing, the solid doors on the Yamaha Wolverine X2, plus the addition of high and wide fenders, keep the mud and moisture kicked up by your tires out of the cab and off of the driver and passenger, which makes for a much more comfortable ride. Inside, high-back captain style seats hug the person sitting in them and provide a comfortable, cushioned ride that won’t leave your body stiff or hurting after a long day riding. Plus, the driver’s seat and the steering wheel are both adjustable giving you the ability to fine tune the fit specifically to the driver. A spacious cab also allows for plenty of legroom so taller passengers won’t feel confined or crammed. A console positioned between the seats gives you two cupholders plus a safe place to store your things while you’re riding. My wife puts her camera, cell phone and even purse in it when we ride. In the dash, an all-digital panel gives you an overview of the vehicle displaying your gears, speed, fuel gauge, 4WD engagement and much more. Plus, the X2 is Adventure Pro Ready, prewired to accept Yamaha’s Adventure Pro GPS system which gives riders access to all kinds of cool features like trail routes, social media integration, and even the ability to communicate with your X2 and get vehicle data and warnings.
This Wolverine X2 from Yamaha is every shade of awesome. It perfectly pairs utility and work into one machine allowing people to use it as they see fit in a way that best suits their lifestyle. The best part, for me, is the dependability that myself and others have come to love from Yamaha. The Yamaha Wolverine X2 is Built Real World Tough and assembled in the USA. You don’t have to worry when you purchase a Yamaha ATV or Side-by-Side, you can rest easy knowing that they’ve tested their vehicles beyond every reasonable situation, so you know you’re getting a top quality, dependable vehicle ready to carry you through virtually anything.
I’m pumped to use the Wolverine X2 for all my 2019 adventures, all of which I’ll be sharing with you. Hit up your local Yamaha dealer and take a look at the new Wolverine X2, climb inside, sit down, have a look around. It’s awesome, I promise!
