Now, with that in mind, let’s focus on the knife I fancy most - the Benchmade Infidel 3300. Of course, some haters might argue that the Infidel is primarily a self-defense knife aimed squarely at law enforcement and military style use, rather than common household chores of slicing apples, opening boxes and every day carry. By the same token, I’ll also chime in and venture a guess that would be attackers might find the Infidel 3300 a bit intimidating, but I chalk that up to a positive when considering its purchase. Nonetheless, and contrary to what you just read, I have never come across a job too big, too little, or too tough, that this Benchmade flagship (OTF) Out The Front knife couldn’t handle. The Infidel 3300 has a double action which provides automatic two-way movement through a single button or lever which is great for one hand use. Its blade length is 3.91 inches, overall length is 8.91 inches, closed length is 5.00 inches, its Weight is 4.9 ounces and its price tag is a whopping $400 bucks. Ouch, I know, I should have warned you earlier. My bad! Then again, considering the design, engineering, materials, construction, finish, quality, customer service, and warranty this maker includes with this knife, and the fact that you could not re-produce one like it in your typical home workshop, the price is not unreasonable, just a tad expensive.
With the blade, Benchmade opted for D2 tool steel on this double-edge spear-point dagger blade, with a flat grind and a matte satin finish, or you can opt for the available black coated. D2 tool steel is extremely durable with a fantastic ability to hold an edge and the Infidel 3300 comes razor sharp right out-of-the-box. This is a high carbon steel that’s technically not a full stainless steel, but what sets it apart is its hardness. It takes about six pounds of pressure for auto-out of the blade and about the same for auto-in. That’s comparable to the trigger pull of a double-action handgun. Also, being an inertia driven blade, there is no spring pressure on the blade, meaning if you deploy or retract the blade against resistance, it won’t penetrate or retract. This feature is a blessing in disguise, because if you accidentally open it in your pocket it won’t penetrate your flesh too deep, maybe a ½ inch or so. The switch requires about ¾ of an inch travel to operate, so no additional safety is used or needed.
Another key point I want to hammer home is the Infidel’s single hand use and its advantages. See, all the while I spent scouring novelty shops, hardware and big box stores for the perfect "life-knife", I never once considered the usefulness of an automatic knife. I concerned myself with size, the materials it was constructed with, how it fit my hand, my pocket, etc., but I completely overlooked the practical applications and freedom that an automatic knife provided its user. In addition, the ergonomics make this knife very easy for people to use in either their right of left hand.
Now Please keep in mind that many states have laws restricting the ownership, possession, or carry of automatic knives except for active military or law enforcement. So be sure to check your states regulations regarding this matter so that you stay compliant with the law. If it isn't legal in your state, contact your local and state elected officials and politely encourage them to amend that law, and you could even go so far as to contact Knife Rights, www.kniferights.org, and they could help you organize a statewide petition.
Well, there you have it. I've thoroughly plead my case and expressed my undying love for the Benchmade Infidel 3300. I can honestly say that it's the best Every Day Carry knife on the market and it has more than earned the right to be called my "Life Knife". It's taken me over six years to finally come to this conclusion, but after field dressing countless deer, digging several dozen holes to plant flowers, cutting sheetrock, stripping electrical wires, scraping mud out of tire rims and trimming my fingernails with it, I can't imagine going a day without it.
P.S. I forgot to mention that Chicks dig Dudes with kick butt knives, it's clinically proven and tested.
